Standards for Teacher Competence in
Educational Assessment of Students
Assessment
is defined as the process of obtaining information that is used to make
educational decisions about students, to give feedback to the students about
their progress, strengths, and weaknesses, to judge instructional effctiveness
and curricural adequacy, and to inform policy. The assessment competencies included
here are the knowledge and skills critical to a teacher’s role as educator. The
associations subscribe to the view that student assessment is an essential part
of teaching and that good teaching cannot exist without good student
assessment. Thus, assessment training should be widely available to practicing
teachers trough staff development programs.
One
of the distinctive ways in standards for teacher competence in educational
assessment of students is teachers should be skilled in developing
assessment methods appropriate for instructional decisions. Sometimes
we find many teachers who have lack of developing assessment methods skill,
thats why it produced assessment that less effective. Teachers often use
published or other external assessment tools, but , what if the teachers stuck in the pitfalls of student
assessment? What should they do? Thats why they should have the conceptual and
application skill to avoid it such common pitfalls unless they prepare to do
the analyses by themselves. It
is including to the important responsibility for all teachers with respect to
choosing and developing appropriate assessment methods. Teacher should be able
to select assessment methods that are compatible with instructional goals and
purposes. I think one of the most important points of those
sets of standards is the crucial
role of the individual teacher in
implementing any significant improvements in educational assessment of
students.
