How to Make A Good Essay

Some of you probably have learnt about making a paragraph or well-known as essay. Actually, making an essay is easy for us to do if we know the whole steps of its. Here, i would like to provide you some ways to make a good paragraph. Basically, this note is a reaction paper that i wrote after i had learnt it in writing subject in third semester. Hopefully this note can help you to write your essay easily.

In making a good essay,the first step that  we should do is decide a topic. If we had decided a topic, it will be easy for us to develop this paragraph into a good essay. Thus, to make a good essay, there are some steps/methods  to be followed. It is to avoid the repetition or confused from the topic that will be written by the author and make us easy to write it. These parts refer to parts of the Thesis Statement.

What is Thesis Statement?

The Thesis Statement is the most important sentence in essay. We may say that Thesis Statement is a part of essay. It is the main idea which cover up all content of the essay and give direction or number of body paragraphs. Clear Thesis Statement will be produced a good written. Those parts are:

First, Topic and Controlling Idea. Thesis Statement has two main parts: the topic and controlling idea. Topic is the subject of the essay and controlling idea is something that the author will say/write about the topic. So, the topic and controlling idea have a connection.

Example :

                Detective Conan has been the most wanted comic since 1994

In this essay, the author should explain why Detective Conan comic could be interested by many people. In making essay, its not only covered up by the topic sentence, but the author also tell to the reader what the author is going to say about the topic. Therefore, we need to put the controlling idea.

We can see the example above, Detective Conan is the topic of the essay. While, the most wanted comic since 1994 is the controlling idea of the essay.  

                Second, Predictor. The predictor of a thesis statement tells the reader how many body paragraphs there will be in the essay and what their content will be. For example,

                It is the cultural,economic, and governmental centre of Denmark make Copenhagen as a capital and most populated city of Denmark.

In this statement, the topic is Copenhagen. The controlling idea is a capital and most populated city of Denmark. The third part of this thesis statement lists the three reasons that the author believes were most important : cultural, economic, and governmental. The third part of this thesis statement as predictor, because it predicts the number and content of the essay paragraphs.

               

Third, Rules for Thesis Statements. It have 5 rules, which are:

1. A thesis statement must be a statement, not a question.

2. A thesis statement must be a complete sentence. This means that it must have a subject and a verb with a tense.

3. A thesis statement is an opinion; it cannot be a simple statement of fact. A fact does not need any support, and therefore we cannot write an essay about it.

4. A thesis statement must state the controlling idea. This means that we must state our position on the topic; we cannot simply announce the topic of our essay.

5. A thesis statement should have only one controlling idea.

                Fourth, Guidelines for Introductory Paragraphs. Introductory paragraph is the first paragraph in an essay. Without using this in the first paragraph, the essay seem to be awkward and non overview. We need to make the reader feels curious about our essay. Thus, the purpose of the introductory paragraph is twofold which are to get the readers’ attention and to introduce the subject of the essay.

         There are several guidelines for writing a good introductory paragraph.

Ø  It must be relevant to the topic; that is, it should not introduce material not covered in the essay.

Ø  It should not preview the points that will form the body of the essay.

Ø  There should be at least two sentences before the thesis statement. In order words it should be a minimum of three sentences.

Ø  The thesis statement should come at the end of the introductory paragraph.

There are some types of Introductory Paragraphs :

Anecdote ; Anecdote is a brief story that illustrates our topic.

Interesting Facts or Statistic ; To write this kind of introduction, the only thing that we should remember is having enough knowledges. We should know some real or factual information based on our essay. Usually we can find it in journal or newspaper.

Historical Introduction ; it is not meant to be a comprehensive account, it simply provides general historical background.

General to Specific ; this is commomly used to introduction. Usually the author begins the introduction by general topic and then goes down until the specific point. We must remember to keep the introduction relevant.

             All in all, in making good essay, it has some rules and methods that we must follow. Make sure that we decide a topic and controlling idea first, before we are going to write the essay smoothly. Then, try to avoid the repetition of the essay to acquire a good essay.
