A Sweet Memory From Cotton Candy

Cotton Candy

I remember..

I still remember.

The day when she asked me to walk around in the centre park of the city. We were still a kid in that day.
She acted significantly different as if we would be apart. I had no idea at that time, cause i was a kid.
We went to the park, her parents brought us there, then left us to play anything we want, to give us a times to  play.

I do love cotton candy, but she did not. I remember when she said that, “i hate that kind of candy, its like i eat the mud full with sugar!”
Unbelievable, she hold my hand and carried me to buy two plastics of cotton candy with big size, she picked up the pink one and i the blue one. She told me that she tried to accustomed herself to like cotton candy in order that she didn’t want me to leave her just because she doesn’t like it.

Then i promised to her that i would never ever leave her, cause she is my bestfriend. We laughed together, i was waiting for her to finish her candy, we talked alot while we were sitting on the swing. We talked about our dreams, what would we do after we graduated from elementary school, and at that time we had a plan that we want to choose the same school. It was such a beautiful day, we stayed there till afternoon.

But now, those memories were left behind a long time ago.
The day after we met, she had gone for ever. She left me alone. I still cannot believe it was the last day we met.
A big disaster happened. She passed away.. i was in pain, really painful. She was the first bestfriend of mine. I keep still her promise that we always be bestfriend even she was not here anymore. Those cotton candies are the witnesses of our memories, those sweet cotton candies...

TedTalks : Patricia Ryan " Don't Insist on English " (Summary)

Don’t Insist on English !!
by Patricia Ryan

Mrs. Ryan has been living and teaching in the Gulf for over 30 years. She has seen a lot of changes in that time. In her speech, she talks about language loss and the globalization of English. Unfortunately, languages are dying at an unprecedented rate. A language dies every 14 days. Now, English is the undisputed global language at the same time.

The major change that she has seen is how teaching English has morphed from being a mutually beneficial practice to become a massive International business today. No longer just a foreign language on the school curriculum and no longer the sole domain of mother England, it has become a bandwagon for evey English-speaking nation on earth. After that, the latest World University Rangkings, in the universities of the U.K. and the U.S. students who are non-native speaker  have to pass the test if they want to have an English education.

English teachers reject the student who doesn’t speak English. They put a stop sign and stop them in their tracks. However, English teachers are the gatekeepers. Students have to satisfy them first that their English is good enough. It’s pleasant that we have a global language. We need one today more than ever. We no need to end up with 600 languages and the main one being English, we need more than that.

English is not always a must in getting the opportunity of a better life. We can see the influential intelligentsia such as Einstein, he didn’t have to pass an English test. He was considered remedial at school because he was dyslexia. Luckily, there is also no TOEFL test in 1964. But, now millions of students take those tests every year.

Thus, let us not keep them and ourselves in the dark. Let us celebrate diversity. Mind your language. Use it to spread great ideas.

TedTalks : Kelly McGonigal "How to Make Stress Your Friend" (Summary)

How to Make Stress Your Friend

by Kelly McGonigal

Kelly McGonigal is a health psychologist, and her mission is to help people be happier and healthier.

The study tracked 30.000 adults in the US for eight years, and they started by asking people about stress that they have experienced and the effect of it. Then, they used public death records to find out who died.
Some bad news first, people who experienced a lot of stress in the previous year had a 43% increased risk of dying, that’s for people who view stress as harmful. But, people who experienced a lot of stress but did not view stress as harmful were no more likely to die. They had the lowest risk of dying, including people who had relatively little stress.

Now the researchers estimated that over the eight years they were tracking death, 182.000 Americans died prematurely, its not from stress, but from the belief that stress is bad for you. That is over 20.000 death a year.  The believing stress is bad for you has the 15th largest cause of death in the US last year, killing more people than skin cancer, HIV/AIDS and homicide.

In a study conducted at Harvard University. Before the test takers went through the social stress test, they were taught to rethink their stress response as helpful.  That pounding heart is preparing them for action. If they are breathing faster, it’s no problem. It’s getting more oxygen to their brain.  And participants who learned to view the stress response as helpful for their performance, well, they were less stressed out, less anxious, more confident. It means that stress can make us healthier when we change our mind about stress.

One of the most under-appreciated aspects of the stress response, and the idea is, stress makes us social.  To know about the side of stress going to make us healthier is refers to oxytocin.  Oxytocin doesn’t only act on our brain, it also acts on our body. One of its main roles in our body is to protect our cardiovascular system from the effect of stress.  It’s a natural anti-inflammatory. It’s also helps our blood vessels stay relaxed during stress. Surprisingly, all of these physical benefits of oxytocin are enhanced by social contact and social support.

Again, stress gives us access to our hearts. The compassionate heart that finds joy and meaning in connecting with others. Our pounding physical heart is working so hard to give  us strength and energy. When we choose to view stress in this way, we are not just getting better at stress, we are actually making a pretty profound statement. We are saying that we can trust ourselves to handle life’s challenges. And we should remember that we don’t have to face them alone, as long as we surrounded ourself among societies.

TED Talks : Terry Moore " Why Is 'X' The Unknown?" (Summary)

Why is ‘x’ the unknown?

By Terry Moore
(Summary)

Terry Moore on TED.com :

The common question about “ why is it that the letter X represents the unknown?” has already found by Mr. Moore.

About six years ago Mr. Moore decided to learn Arabic, which recognize as supremely logical language. He also argued that, In writing a word or phrase or sentence is like crafting an equation, because every part carries a lot of information.  One of the reasons that so much to think of as Western science, mathematics and engineering that really affected of the common Era by the Persians, Arabs, and Turks.

This includes the little system in Arabic called al-jebra.When the Arabian arrived in their way to Europe in 11th and 12th centuries, they were interested in translating the wisdom into a European language. But, the problems are some Arabic sounds unfamiliar with European unless they have lots of practice and the sounds tend not to be represented by European language character. Arabic has a letter Sheen ‘sh’; first letter of word Shai un “something” and ‘al’ as  definite which means al-shai un “the unknown thing”. In contrary, Spanish language doesn’t have SH sound, so by convention, they created a rule in which they borrowed the CK sound ‘ck’ from the classical Greek in the form of the letter Kai.

Later, when this material was translated into a common European language, which is to say Latin, they simply replaced the Greek Kai with the Latin X. Hence, the answer of X is unknown because Spanish cannot say ‘sh’

Video Analysis: English Class with Korean 4th Graders

English Class with Korean 4th Graders
(Video Analysis)

To see the video, you may click here.

This video made by a teacher from Korea and has been implemented in a public elementary school in Korea, especially in Busan with Korean 4th graders.

The video shows that, the teacher  used an Audio-Lingual Method in the teaching-learning process. The teacher also made an improvisation in this method during he taught. At the beginning, he read a book which explains the importance of learning. After that, the teacher started to show the video after  dealing with his students. After they finished to watch, the teacher asked the students what they has gotten from the video. He also repeated the video once again and did the same thing. The videos have been shown for several times by provided 3 kinds of videos. Then, he divided them into 5 groups to play a game called “ Matching Two”. Each of groups has to compete to earn much scores in order to be a winner. The teacher also gave them a reward that is a pack of candy.
For the detail analysis will be provided below in questions form ;

1. Role of the teacher and the student
In this video, the teacher as a leader in guiding his students. From each parts, students and teacher were more like partners, but students here were tend to coorperate with their friends. Teacher was obligated to take control by giving them directions and rules to follow by the students. For instance, in the video provides that teacher gave them three videos for watching, repeating, and sharing what they has gotten from those videos, then the teacher also directed them a rule in playing game cooperatively. As what Freeman defined that, “ The teacher is like an orchestra leader, directing and controlling the language behavior of her students. She is also responsible for providing her students with a good model for imitation. Students are imitators of the teacher’s model or the tapes she supplies of model speakers. They follow the teacher’s direction and respond as accurately and as rapidly as possible” (Larsen and Freeman, 2000). Thus, teacher and students have their own role and establish the classroom situation more active.

2.  The nature of student and teacher interaction
The nature of the students and teacher went both ways, which were teacher to student, student to teacher, and student to student. Besides, the teacher as a director while students as the objects of the direction. This is related to the nature of Audio-Lingual Method, as what Freeman and Larsen stated that, “ There is student to student interaction in chain drills or when students take different roles in dialogs, but this interaction is teacher-directed. Most of the interaction is between teacher and students and initiated by the teacher.” For instance, when students took a rest for a moment, while teacher prepared for the next section, he were often asking them about what they like to and bringing them back to their focus as such asking for clapping.

3. Characteristic of teaching-learning process
On characteristic of teaching-learning process, teacher also provided new vocabularies and the videos were structural and suitable for the 4th grade students. Larsen and Freeman also emphasized for the characteristic of Audio-Lingual Method, they said that, “New vocabulary and structural patterns are presented through dialogs. The dialogs are learned through imitation and repetition.”
The videos were also in good pattern, where students were ordered to listen the video clearly, then they repeated it fluently and the last they answered the questions correctly. In the video, teacher divided the section into two stages. First, playing the videos and second, teacher divided them into five groups for playing game called “ Matcing Two”, this game was using a monitor as the material. The first step, one of the students in one group must to stand up by saying “please be quiet!” loudly while another group was asked for clapping. If its group are succeed, they will get the point from each group. Second, they were ordered to read and choose two sentences on the screen to match, if the choices are matching, they will get higher score. The last, for the winner, they will get a pack of candy.

4. How does the teacher response student’s error
The teacher was aware to correct the students’ error directly through their own friends (in peer), the teacher tried to avoid the mistakes suddenly and preventing them to speak in their mother tongue. It has provided in length 07:56. Larsen and Freeman has defined that, “ Students error are to be avoided if it all possible through the teacher’s awareness of where the students will have difficulty and restriction of what they are taught to say.
To this end, the nature of classroom situation can be measured by the role of the teachers themselves. How can they prepare enough themselves to raise the positive feedback from the students. That’s why the election of the methods have a strong influence in pursuing the goal of the teachers. Make sure that the methods choosed based on the needs of students.
